Curriculum Vitae
Laurent Schmalen, born in Luxembourg in 1979, received the Dipl.-Ing. degree in electrical engineering and information technology and the Dr.-Ing. degree from RWTH Aachen University, Aachen, Germany, in 2005 and 2011, respectively. From 2011 to 2016, he was a research engineer with Alcatel-Lucent Bell Labs. From 2016 to 2019, he was a department head of the department "Coding for Optical Communications" at Nokia Bell Labs, Stuttgart, Germany. From 2014 to 2019, he was also a Guest Lecturer with the University of Stuttgart, Stuttgart, Germany. Since 2019, he has been a Full Professor at Karlsruhe Institute of Technology, Karlsruhe, Germany, where he co-heads the Communications Engineering Laboratory. His research interests include channel coding, machine learning, modulation formats, and optical communications.
Laurent Schmalen Schmalen was a recipient and a co-recipient of several awards, including the E-Plus Award for his Ph.D. thesis, the 2013 Best Student Paper Award from the IEEE Signal Processing Systems Workshop, and the 2016 and 2018 Journal of Lightwave Technology Best Paper Awards. He has been awarded an ERC Consolidator Grant.In 2023 Laurent Schmalen was appointed IEEE Fellow. He has served on the technical program committee of multiple scientific conferences. He is the TPC co-chair of the 2025 International Symposium on Topics in Coding (ISTC). He serves as general co-chair of the 2025 International ITG Conference on Systems, Communications, and Coding. He currently serves an Associate Editor of IEEE Transactions on Communications.
