PhD Student (m/f/d) in the Field of Communication and Information Theory

Job Description

We are seeking an exceptional candidate for an academic position with above average knowledge of communication and/or information theory. Your responsibilities will include conducting independent research in one or more of the following areas:

  • Machine learning for energy efficient communication systems, for the physical layer and the media access layer.
  • Optimization of the physical layer in 6G communication system.
  • Semantic communication in the context of 6G
  • Information theory of energy efficient communication systems

Responsibilities include as well as independent research in one or more of the above areas. In addition, you will be responsible for publishing selected results in high-impact journals and at conferences. Your duties will also include assisting in teaching courses at CEL. The activity is combined with the goal of obtaining a doctorate (Dr.-Ing.) at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT). The typical duration of the doctorate is 3-5 years. At CEL, you can expect an interdisciplinary research environment at the interface between electrical engineering and information technology, computer science, physics, and applied mathematics, which offers you extensive scientific freedom. Furthermore, extensive opportunities for further education are available to you.

Contract Details

We offer a temporary full-time position (100%) with a salary in the remuneration group TV-L E13, depending on the fulfillment of the professional and personal requirements. The time limit is limited to 1 year, with the possibility of extension.

Requirements and Qualifications

You have an outstanding Master's degree in electrical engineering and information technology, communications engineering, technical computer science, applied mathematics or in a related field of study, very good English skills, good verbal and written expression, as well as an independent and responsible way of working. Ideally, you have programming experience as well as advanced knowledge in one or more of the related topics channel coding, information theory, mobile or optical communication or semantic data processing. We also welcome applicants from other disciplines who would like to apply their knowledge "cross-domain" in communications engineering systems. You have a dexterous and confident manner in dealing with project partners and students, organizational skills and the ability to work in a team.
